Why a photo mosaic makes a memorable gift

  • It is personal: a family portrait, a beloved pet or the place where you met, rebuilt one brick at a time.
  • It is an experience, not just an object. Building a mosaic is a calm, absorbing project to share during the holidays, with children or partners.
  • It lasts: once finished, it becomes a piece of wall art that will be looked at for years.

How to create it in three steps

You do not need any design skills. PhotoToBrick does the planning for you, entirely in your browser: your photo is never uploaded anywhere.

  • Upload your photo, choose the size, from a single 48×48 baseplate up to large multi-plate displays, and frame exactly the part of the picture you want.
  • Choose the pieces: classic 1×1 plates, or the Eco mode, which merges same-colored areas into larger pieces to reduce the number of parts.
  • Download the exact parts list as an Excel file and the step-by-step instructions for each baseplate as PDF or JPG.

Our experience: building one with the kids

We built our first large mosaic, four 48×48 baseplates, together with our children. We ordered the pieces on BrickLink and worked on it in our spare time over about two weeks. Splitting the work by baseplate made it easy for everyone to help, and the moment the image appeared as the plates came together was the best part.

Plan ahead: when to order the pieces

The plans are ready in minutes, but the bricks are not. Pieces bought on BrickLink come from independent sellers, often from different countries, and delivery times vary from seller to seller. If you want the mosaic finished for Christmas, generate your plans and place your orders well in advance, ideally by early December.

Short on time? Give the project instead

If the bricks will not arrive in time, give the project itself: print the mosaic preview and the instructions, put them in a frame or a nice envelope, and build it together after the holidays. It is a gift that keeps the celebration going into January.

Choosing the right photo

  • Faces and pets work best when they fill most of the picture.
  • Pick photos with good light and a simple background.
  • High-contrast images keep more detail in brick form.
  • Use photos you took yourself or have the rights to use.

Questions & Answers

How long does it take to build a LEGO® photo mosaic?
It depends on the size and on how many people are helping. A single 48×48 baseplate has 2,304 studs and can be completed over a few relaxed evenings. Our four-baseplate mosaic took about two weeks of spare time, building together as a family.
Can children help build it?
Yes. Following the color map one baseplate at a time is simple and repetitive, which makes it a great shared project. Younger children may need help with small pieces, and the pieces are not suitable for children under 3.
How much does a LEGO® photo mosaic cost?
Using PhotoToBrick is free. The cost of the bricks depends on the size, the number of colors and the sellers you choose. The parts list tells you exactly how many pieces of each color you need, so you can compare prices before you buy.
Where can I buy the pieces?
You can order individual parts on BrickLink, a large marketplace of independent sellers, or through the official LEGO® Pick a Brick service. Our exported parts list includes part numbers, colors and quantities to make searching easier.
Is my photo safe?
Yes. All processing happens in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded to our servers or shared with anyone.
